## Domain names: what they are

A domain name is the address of your website. People type it into a browser, or they click a search result that has your domain in the URL. Some examples:

- `yourbusiness.com.au` — Australian business.
- `yourbusiness.com` — international.
- `yourcharity.org.au` — Australian non-profit.

You choose what your domain is when you register it. The convention is to pick something close to your business name, short, and easy to spell out loud.

## Email addresses: what they are

If you've ever written your business email on a card or an invoice, you'll know that something like `you@gmail.com` doesn't look as serious as `you@yourbusiness.com.au`. A personalised email address (one that uses your own domain) signals to customers that you're a real business and not a side hobby.

A typical small business has a handful of these:

- `hello@yourbusiness.com.au` — general inbox.
- `accounts@yourbusiness.com.au` — invoices and bookkeeping.
- `you@yourbusiness.com.au` — your direct address.
